FAITH AND SOCIAL COHESION UNIT (FSCU)

A new Faith and Social Cohesion Unit (FSCU) established by the Charity Commission for England and Wales.  Objective of the Unit is to:

“encourage faith organisations to register and enjoy the benefits of registration. We also want to support those already registered by offering them training, guidance and advice to promote high standards of governance and accountability.”

"work with and support the faith sector in promoting the valuable contribution it makes to society, enhancing and promoting high standards of governance and accountability  and creating an environment in which moderation, cultural understanding and community cohesion can flourish.”

In 2004 the Commission began a long-term project to deepen its understanding of faith-based charities and the context in which they work, so they could improve the way we work with these charities. The first phase of this was our work with Independent Evangelical Churches, working specifically on the development of standard governing documents and toward building a positive relationship with these churches.

The second phase was holding a series of 15 consultation events with charities from 11 other different faith groups including Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim and Sikh faiths. During this project, the faith-based charities we consulted identified a need for more tailored advice and support in improving governance. The FSCU is the dedicated Unit that has been set up to meet these needs.

The Unit is now in its third phase of the Commission's work with faith-based charities,  is to work specifically with Muslim charities.  Our consultations identified that Muslim groups would particularly benefit  from tailored support.  Islam is the country's second largest religion and the fasted growing single faith group in the country and  we know from the Register of Charities that Muslim charities are currently underrepresented.  In time, we hope to share the lessons learnt, products developed and good practice identified by the FSCU with all faith charities.
